The Adobe Distinguished Lecture Series welcomes Lev Manovich! He is an artist, writer, and one of the world's most influential digital culture theorists. He was included in the lists of “25 People Shaping the Future of Design” (Complex, 2013) and “50 Most Interesting People Building the Future” (Verge, 2014). Manovich is a Presidential Professor in Data Science and Computer Science at The Graduate Center, City University of New York, and a Director of the Cultural Analytics Lab. He has published 180 articles and 15 books that include AI Aesthetics, Cultural Analytics, Instagram and Contemporary Image, and The Language of New Media described as “the most suggestive and broad-ranging media history since Marshall McLuhan.” His digital art projects were shown in 120 international exhibitions in Centre Pompidou, ICA London, ZKM, KIASMA, and other leading venues. Abstract: We are currently witnessing the birth of a true media creation revolution: the rise of "generative media." This revolution could be as important as the adoption of linear perspective in western art in the sixteenth century, photography in the nineteenth century, or digital media applications in the late twentieth century. In my talk, I'll go over a few aspects of visual generative media that I believe are particularly significant or novel. I will also speculate on some potential future directions for generative media development that are distinct from what has been developed thus far.

Lev Manovich is an author of books on digital culture and new media, and professor of Computer Science at the Graduate Center, City University of New York.
