Adobe Research’s world-class scientists, engineers, artists, and designers have been recognized as an “Innovative Team of the Year” in a new list by Fast Company. The list appeared in the magazine’s “Best Workplaces for Innovators” issue.
Adobe Research was one of 10 finalists named, a cohort chosen for “encouraging innovation at all levels” and “whose creativity and passion have driven major breakthroughs for the company.”
Gavin Miller, Head of Adobe Research, explains that “the company expects us to be its ‘radar’ and its imagination. We try to recognize new trends, and to anticipate future possibilities, before they emerge elsewhere. We use these glimpses of possible worlds to inspire us to create new technologies and unique experiences.”
Many pioneering technologies created by Adobe Research have been incorporated into Adobe’s tools. Recently, those include the watercolor and oil painting engine for Adobe Fresco, a free app delivering a natural painting and drawing experience; Select Subject and Object Selection features in Adobe Photoshop, which automatically identify and select objects to optimize an image; and Content Aware Fill for video in Adobe After Effects, which allows users to automatically remove unwanted objects in videos. Adobe Research partnered with the Advanced Product Development (APD) group in Adobe’s Digital Video & Audio team to create Character Animator, a major breakthrough in automated animation.
In addition, Adobe Research has contributed technologies to Adobe Analytics, including anomaly detection to spot unexpected data, and new models for determining marketing attribution, showing what customers want. Researchers created tools for predicting successful email subject lines for Adobe Campaign. And they contributed smart content authoring, automated layout creation, and other content intelligence tools for Adobe Experience Manager.
Adobe Research also benefits from collaborations with interns and university partners. More than half of the technology patents filed by Adobe Research last year included an intern as an inventor.
